From: Susan Hartmann, Chair, Awards and Prizes Committee
Subject: Awards and Prizes 2008
The Awards and Prizes Committee calls for applications and nominations for
awards, prizes, and research grants listed on the attached pages, one for
graduate students and one for undergraduates. It is especially important
that we encourage our undergraduate students to apply. We have
tried to simplify the process for both professors and students. Please read
these materials carefully and follow them exactly as you prepare your applications
and letters of recommendation. Applications must be submitted in hardcopies,
except for graduate students who are out of the country doing research. All
applications and nominations, with the required number of copies, should
be submitted to Gail Summerhill, Department of History, no later than 5:00
p.m., Friday, April 4, 2008 Applications
for the Guthrie Award are due Monday, March 3, 2008.

For Graduate Students and Their Recommenders
Strong preference will be given to students who have passed the Ph.D. candidacy
exam. We encourage applicants to demonstrate that you are applying
for additional funds from other sources. Both applicants and recommenders
should indicate the state of progress on the project and an anticipated
completion date.
We have streamlined the process so that recommenders may write just one letter
per student; the letter must name all the awards for which the student is
being recommended. Just one copy of the letter, in a sealed enveloped
with the recommender’s signature across the seal, should be submitted
to the student who will include it in his/her application.
Graduate students applying for more than one award may submit just one application
form, but they must indicate all awards for which they are applying on the
cover sheet. They must submit an original and one copy of the application
along with the two sealed envelopes from their two recommenders as part of
the application. Students should follow the instructions for the budget
and CV on the application form. If you need a model CV or budget, please
contact Gail Summerhill.
Please make sure to title your project. It is a good idea, when possible,
to have your advisor look over a draft of your proposal.
