Graduate Application Procedures
Application materials from new students and from OSU graduate students in other
departments must be postmarked by December 1st. Admitted
students enter the graduate program in the autumn quarter.
To apply for admission to the graduate program in History, an applicant
should go online at www.gradapply.osu.edu and
submit their application and the application fee.
NOTE: On the application form, in addition to listing History as the Graduate
Program, applicants must select one of the following fields as a specialization.
Below is outlined what should be sent to the Office of Admissions,
and what should be submitted to the Department of History:
Office of Admissions: Submit the following
documents to the Office of Graduate Admissions, Lincoln Tower 3rd
Floor, 1800 Cannon Crive, Columbus OH 43210:
- Official transcripts for all previous academic work.
- Official scores of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General
Test for all students whose native language is English and for all
applicants for university fellowships. NOTE: The GRE history subject
test is not required. The institution code for Ohio State is 1592
and the department code for History is 2799. International
students are required to take the TOEFL.
Department of History: Submit the following
to the Graduate Studies Coordinator, Department of History, 106 Dulles
Hall, 230 West 17th Avenue, Columbus OH 43210:
(1) Official transcripts for all previous work. While the
Office of Admissions also receives the official transcripts they
retain them for their records and do not forward them to the Department
of History.
(2) A brief intellectual autobiography or statement
of purpose (approximately two or three pages, double spaced) which
explains why the applicant wishes to pursue a graduate program in
history, including career goals, special interests, and probable
major field of study. If,
under “Faculty Profiles” you have seen a faculty member
with whom you would like to work, please mention his/her name.
(3) A curriculum vitae (one or two pages) indicating the applicant’s
education, accomplishments and qualifications for graduate study
in the major field of choice (including, for example, language training,
prizes or awards, leadership positions, paper presentations, publications).
(4) At least three letters of recommendation from persons
acquainted with the applicant's scholastic ability.
(5) A sample of the applicant's scholarly work, such as an M.A. or
honors thesis, chapters thereof, or a research paper or historiographical
essay. We do not want this document to exceed 40 pages.
International Students: Students whose native language
is not English must submit to the Department of History a sample of
written work in English which has been evaluated by a supervising professor.
They must also meet the Department's TOEFL minimum score requirement
of 550 on the paper-based test OR 213 on the computer-based test, or
79 on the Internet TOEFL (iTOEFL).
