Alan Beyerchen
Alan D. Beyerchen; B.A. (German); M.A. (History); Ph.D.

Professor Beyerchen teaches and researches in nineteenth and twentieth
century German history. His graduate students have completed dissertations
on a wide variety of topics in cultural, socio-economic and political history.
His own publications have ranged from studies of the early 19th century military theorist Carl von Clausewitz, through the cultural matrix of science and technology in the German Empire, to the complex political environment of scientists in the Third Reich, to the economic competitiveness of German industry at the end of the 20th century. He describes his focus in research as centering on the web of cultural relationships among science, technology, and the values of modernity, while his approach to teaching blends cultural, socio-economic and political history.
He has been awarded major fellowships by the National Humanties Center, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the National Science Foundation, as well as other awards by the American Philosopical Society, the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), and the Holocaust Educational Foundation. He is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has won teaching awards from the Department of History (twice), the College of Humanities, the Ohio State University (Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award) and the Ohio Academy of History.
