THE HONORS PROGRAM IN HISTORY: REQUIREMENTS
(These requirements take effect Spring quarter 1996 for honors students
declaring a history major.)
PREAMBLE
The Honors Program in History is part of the Honors Program in the
Colleges of The Arts and Sciences. The Honors Program in History emphasizes
the development of research and writing skills, along with the acquisition
of historical knowledge. The History Honors Program conforms to the
History Major by developing knowledge of two or more cultures spanning
chronological periods before and after 1750.
The Honors Program in History is designed for exceptional students
who wish to sharpen their writing, research, and analytical skills,
for those who enjoy developing insights into how historians do their
work, or for those who desire to enhance the quality of their educational
experience. The Honors Program in History furnishes excellent preparation
for graduate level work, for professional schools, including law school,
and for careers in business and public service. Honors students enjoy
the opportunity to work as undergraduates with internationally known
scholars.
Advanced training in foreign languages is important for all History
Honors students. Every student should develop proficiency in at least
one foreign language; that means being able to read newspapers, magazines,
scholarly journals, and novels written in that language. History honor's
students are also strongly encouraged to attain such a level of proficiency
in a second foreign language.
