THE HONORS PROGRAM IN HISTORY: REQUIREMENTS

(These requirements take effect Spring quarter 1996 for honors students declaring a history major.)

PREAMBLE

The Honors Program in History is part of the Honors Program in the Colleges of The Arts and Sciences. The Honors Program in History emphasizes the development of research and writing skills, along with the acquisition of historical knowledge. The History Honors Program conforms to the History Major by developing knowledge of two or more cultures spanning chronological periods before and after 1750.

The Honors Program in History is designed for exceptional students who wish to sharpen their writing, research, and analytical skills, for those who enjoy developing insights into how historians do their work, or for those who desire to enhance the quality of their educational experience. The Honors Program in History furnishes excellent preparation for graduate level work, for professional schools, including law school, and for careers in business and public service. Honors students enjoy the opportunity to work as undergraduates with internationally known scholars.

Advanced training in foreign languages is important for all History Honors students. Every student should develop proficiency in at least one foreign language; that means being able to read newspapers, magazines, scholarly journals, and novels written in that language. History honor's students are also strongly encouraged to attain such a level of proficiency in a second foreign language.

HISTORY HONORS REQUIREMENTS

There are two components to the History Honors Program. The first is the Major Program in History; the second is the ASC Honors Program. Below, Section I lists the requirements for the Major Program in History for Honors Students; Section II describes the various tracks the University Honors Program offers, along with Department of History requirements.

I. The Major Program in History for Honors Students

II ASC Honors Tracks

In addition to the above requirements, and as established by the ASC Honors Program and the Department of History, History Honors students must choose one of the following three tracks.

A. With Distinction in History

History Department Faculty recommend that History Honors students write an Honors Thesis, for completion of a thesis gives students the type of training that prepares them for graduate and professional school or professional employment.

History Honors students planning to graduate with Distinction in History will:

1. Devise with their History Adviser, no later than four quarters before graduation, a prospectus for the Honors Thesis. The ASC Honors Committee must approve the prospectus. The student will enroll in History H783 for 10 to 15 credit hours.

H783 is a course in which the student will work with a professor on a research project that enhances the student's knowledge of the discipline and contributes to ongoing historical inquiry.

No more than 15 hours of H783 may be counted for the Honors Program in History.

2. Graduate with a GPA of 3.3.

B. With Honors in the Liberal Arts

History Honors students planning to graduate with Honors in the Liberal Arts will:

1. Fulfill an Honors Contract.

The Honors Contract is devised by the student in consultation with the History and ASC Honors Advisers. It must be approved by the ASC Honors Committee at least three quarters before graduation.

Students should develop second majors, supporting minors, or clusters of strength in several sections of the Honors Contract.

History Honors students are expected to take more challenging courses (upper division and/or Honors sections) in the second major, minor(s), or clusters of strength.

2. Complete 598.02 in place of 598.01.

History 598.02 is a seminar focused on analysis of primary research.

3. Students should develop second majors, supporting minors, or clusters of strength in several sections of the Honors Contract.

History Honors students are expected to take more challenging courses (upper division and/or Honors sections) in the second major, minor(s), or clusters of strength.

4. Graduate with a GPA of 3.3.

C. Honors in the Liberal Arts with Distinction in History

History Honors students planning to graduate with Honors in the Liberal Arts and with Distinction in History will fulfill all of the requirements listed in A. and B. above (with the exception that 598.02 will not be required).

Note: Under exceptional circumstances the Department of History is willing to modify the requirements of the Honors Program in History to fit the specific needs of individual students.
