After the Death of God
Modernist Fragmentation and Unification

a book-in-progress
by
Professor Stephen Kern (History)

Professor Kern's latest book project explores the dynamics of fragmentation and unification in the work of six modernist authors: Friedrich Nietzsche, James Joyce, Sigmund Freud, D. H. Lawrence, Andre Gide, and Martin Heidegger.  He is particularly interested in exploring how all six of these authors sought to respond to the disenchantments and fragmentations of modern life by pursuing projects which would impose novel secular, unifying principles upon experience.  Professor Kern has kindly shared with us a draft of the book's introduction for precirculation (please see attached) and welcomes feedback from all interested parties on issues both methodological and substantive, perhaps especially on matters relating to gender and sexuality.
