What do you love most about history?

Studying history helps to connect past events in a way that aids us in understanding our present. My favorite part of history is understanding the development that has occurred over centuries, and what that development has meant for various classes of people. History can teach students valuable lessons through which society can become more tolerant and accepting as a whole.

Why did you choose to be a history major? 

I have always been fascinated by history and the lives of those who lived in times far different than our own. Before I decided to major in history, I always assumed it would only remain a personal hobby. However, after taking courses in the department, and learning about potential career opportunities, I decided that it would become my major.  

What are the favorite history courses you have taken?

There are many history courses in the department that have been enjoyable; however, I believe my favorites have been History 3231 “Creating Medieval Monsters: Constructions of the ‘Other’”; History 3640: “Medieval Women—Power, Piety, and Production”; and History 3552: “War in World History, 1900-Present.”

Do you have a favorite professor or professors? Who are they and why?

My favorite instructor in this department is Dr. Sara Butler, who teaches medieval and early modern history. Her classes are absolutely fascinating because she finds a balance between lectures and class participation that provides room for individual reflection on the material discussed. Dr. Butler is always willing to help her students with complicated course work, and I would suggest taking at least one of her classes before graduation!
