Undergraduate Spotlight: Alex Bise

Alex Bise

Alex Bise is a history major from Mansfield, OH.

What do you enjoy most about studying history?

Studying history can be fun and exciting, but it can also be grueling and difficult. It is not always easy to look at the past, but studying it gives me the opportunity to be an educated citizen and make well-informed decisions in my life. I think the part I enjoy most about studying history is how it allows us to go back in time. History forces us not to forget the mistakes we have made, but also to not forget the triumphs we have had or the mountains we, as humans, have overcome.

Why did you choose to be a history major?

I have always loved history, even when I was very young, but I never thought of it as a career path until I came to OSU. I started out with a different major but knew in my heart that the history courses I took were what I was most passionate about. When I finally made the switch to being a history major my sophomore year it was because I wanted to start preparing for a career as an educator. To me, teaching others, especially children, about the importance of past events and ideologies is the key to progress.

What are your favorite history courses you have taken at OSU and why?

My favorite history courses from OSU are: “HIST 3083 Civil Rights and Black Power” with Dr. Jeffries, “HIST 3231 Medieval Monsters” with Dr. Butler, and “HIST 2680 Apocalypse in Religion” with Dr. Goldish. These three courses have been my favorite because they challenged me in ways I had not experienced before coming to OSU. Each of the courses written above is taught by an outstanding professor that wants to see their students succeed while learning.

If you could take the place of one historical figure for one day who would you choose and why?

While I am unsure of what historical figure I would take the place of for one day, I do have a historical role model that I look up to because of her courage and leadership style. That woman is American Civil Rights Activist Ella Baker (1903-1986).

What is one thing you wish every Buckeye knew about the past?

One thing every Buckeye should know about the past is that… it is extremely important! While the past may technically be behind us, the repercussions of past events and ideologies stay with us as a society for long periods of time. By studying the past we are able to make ourselves better, more proactive, citizens.

What do you like best about being a student at OSU?

The best thing about being a student at OSU is the fact that you can meet so many different people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. This makes for rich class discussions that have been the highlight of my educational journey.
