Elowen is a history major from Columbus, Ohio, minoring in in music, French, and legal foundations of society.

She says, "Both of my parents were Buckeyes and I’m proud to be continuing the legacy."

What do you enjoy most about studying history?
My favorite thing about studying history is storytelling. If it’s boring, you’re doing it wrong.

Why did you choose to be a history major?
I’ve always loved history, but I chose to study it here because of the influence of my high school IB History and AP Government teachers. There are so many valuable skills that I’m learning in this program like writing and reading comprehension that will be very relevant in law school.

What are the favorite history courses you have taken at Ohio State and why?
My favorite history courses I’ve taken at OSU are 3210, 3211, and 4215 (the study of ancient and classical Greece) with Professor Greg Anderson. While I haven’t taken a history course that I haven’t liked, these classes have been exceptionally phenomenal. Professor Anderson’s lectures are not only entertaining, but very informative.

If you could take the place of a historical figure (either dead or alive) for one day, who would you choose and why?
While I don’t think I would (since I’m pretty attached to modern inventions like my phone and computer), if I had to, I think I would take the place of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. After watching RBG, I really want to investigate the impact that she had for women going to law school and entering the legal field.

What’s one thing you wish every Buckeye knew about the past?
Every Buckeye should know that history isn’t just names and dates. It’s full of critical thinking and evaluation. It’s absolutely essential for us to learn how to evaluate evidence and sources, especially now since we live in a time where it’s easy to make inaccurate information seem true.

What do you like best about being a student at Ohio State?
The best thing about being a student at OSU is the school spirit! There are so many opportunities at OSU and so many different ways to get involved. Our campus is huge and is home to many amazing clubs and groups. But one thing I will urge all Buckeyes to do is to get involved specifically with the music department! Whether it’s choir, orchestra, or band, music is an essential experience for Buckeyes on and off the football field. If you don’t already know the words to Carmen, you will learn them!
