Peter Cooper is a history major from Perrysburg, Ohio.

What do you enjoy most about studying history?
The opportunity to learn from a wide variety of thinkers, leaders, and traditions throughout time and understand the relevancy of lessons they have imparted for the present day.

Why did you choose to be a history major?
I have always loved studying history, and I knew majoring in it would allow me to turn my passion into a skillset I could use in a variety of careers and fields.

What are the favorite history courses you have taken at Ohio State and why?
History 3365 (Afghan History) – I really appreciated the opportunity to delve into the history and culture of a region often in the news, but rarely carefully considered.

History 2800H (Introduction to the Discipline of History) – Professor Goldish’s work to simplify and improve his students’ writing and argumentative techniques has been a huge asset to me in my coursework and internship.

If you could take the place of a historical figure (either dead or alive) for one day, who would you choose and why?
I would like to take the place of Eratosthenes of Cyrene for a day so that I could explore the Library of Alexandria during its prime.

What’s one thing you wish every Buckeye knew about the past?
We study history not just to prevent the mistakes made in the past from recurring, but also to avoid being blinded by our own experiences and the dynamism of the present.

What do you like best about being a student at Ohio State?
The community! Wonderful people are everywhere here, and I have met so many amazing friends while also building a great professional network.
