HISTORY 3001: American Political History to 1877

This course introduces students to the complex contestations between American citizens and global actors over the meaning of American democracy, beginning in the pre-colonial period and ending with the period of Reconstruction (1865-1877). Students come to better understand the shifting contours of American democracy and what it has meant to be an American citizen at different times in history.
