Between 1776 and 1920, the United States transformed from a fragile confederacy of bickering states into a globe-spanning empire. This class will consider American foreign relations exploring the contested ideas of ideology and expansion that motivated official policy and international affairs, with a particular emphasis on themes of expansion, immigration, and migration.
