María Hammack Presented Key to Comunidad Negros Mascogos

Asst. Professor María Hammack has been collaborating with Black Seminole communities in Mexico and the United States for over 4 years. She has not only shared her written research with them, but also shared historical documents that she has located through her own work. These records have enabled descendants of these communities to recover important aspects of their community's past. Last Fall break (2024), and this past Spring break (2025), through the Mellon grant she co-directs, María trained and introduced several descendants to 3 key Mexican archives where they had direct access to archival documents about their history. For her contributions and support of their histories, María was presented the key to the Comunidad Negros Mascogos from the Casa of the Black Seminole Diaspora of Coahuila, Mexico at the 2025 Seminole Days Festival, in Bracketteville, Texas.
