I am an ORISE Postdoctoral Fellow within the Air Force Research Lab’s History Office in Dayton, Ohio. I contribute essays to AFRL’s annual histories that emphasize medical technology and sustainability. My dissertation, entitled Caledonian Coast: Ecological Transformation and Conservation of Scottish Waters and Shores, focused on coastal communities’ cultural connections with surrounding ecosystems. It highlighted how local traditions can motivate sustainable practices within industries like agriculture, fishing, and tourism. Before entering graduate school, I majored in evolution and ecology at Ohio State. The environmental history program encouraged me to approach similar ecological topics from a different perspective. For example, I had previously studied insects, but had never considered their connections to colonialism or war. The wide range of expertise within the faculty allowed me to develop the complexity of my thought process, not only as a researcher, but also as an individual. In addition to my current research within the AFRL, I recently established Katie Campbell Creations LLC to pursue digital artwork. I am currently developing a portfolio in order to communicate my environmental work in more visual ways. As well as focusing on this nature-inspired art, I am raising twin toddlers. Fortunately, my daughters share my love of animals, so I enjoy exploring the outdoors with them.
