This course explores the economic, social, and technological history of Britain and its empire in the nineteenth century. Key topics include the rise of free market economics, Victorian welfare policies, the Industrial Revolution, Victorian ideas about sex, race, and gender, the Irish famine, New Imperialism, and Darwinian evolutionary theory.
