Conflict in the Horn of Africa

This course will explore conflict in the Horn of Africa, a region that has been embroiled in interlocking civil wars, ethnic and religious conflicts, territorial disputes, and the disintegration of the nation states for many years. It will examine the root causes, the nature, and the impact of these conflicts on local communities as well as their regional and international implications.

Prereq: English 1110.xx, or permission of instructor. GE historical study course.

Frenemies: Russian-American Relations from the Eighteenth Century to the Present

Long before the Cold War, Russia and the United States were already watching, imagining, and defining themselves through one another. This course follows that relationship from the first encounters through the American Civil War, revolution, world wars, the Cold War, and the Soviet collapse. Why did distant friends become intimate enemies? It concludes with the post-Cold War era and the present crisis, as Russia’s war against Ukraine has pushed U.S.-Russian relations to a new low.

Europe Since 1989: Multiple Europes after the Cold War

This class explores the post-1989 history of Europe through the study of post-communist transitions, the birth of the European Union, political violence and war in Ireland, Yugoslavia, and Ukraine, the effects of the 2008 economic crisis and the 2015 migrant crisis, and the many dilemmas of multicultural Europe. 
The class is open to both Undergraduate and Graduate students; graduate students complete an extra research project.

Prereq or concur: English 1110.xx, or Grad standing, or permission of instructor. GE theme citizenship for div and just wrld course.
