"A Nuclear Biography of the Ohio River," Paul Josephson, Colby College
How the Atomic Energy Commission transformed a river of coal and steel into a river of atoms and radiation.
What have been the environmental, social and political consequences of Cold War nuclear enterprises for our backyards our towns and our rivers? This talk evaluates the transformation of the Ohio River, from its source in Pittsburgh to Paducah, KY, near its confluence with the Mississippi, from a component of the steel industry into an instrument of the peaceful and military atom, and flowing from the hopes of "energy too cheap to meter" at Shippingport, PA, to the realities of production of nuclear fuel for weapons and the waste left behind in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky.
