Dr. Caspian Goggin is a Roman historian specializing in the history of Christianity in Late Antiquity. They are particularly interested in community pressures, marginalized identities, and the complex relations between different religions and religious groups in the late Roman Empire. Their first monograph will focus on the theme of watching and being watched in Late Antique Christian texts, and will examine authors’ responses to, and attempts to control, community connections and social pressure in a religiously diverse world.
Dr. Goggin has pursued their interest in ancient Mediterranean religions in a variety of contexts that have sharpened their appreciation for ancient inter-community relations. After graduating with a BA in Classics and History from the University of Colorado, Boulder, they traveled to Helsinki, Finland for a master’s degree program in Theology that combined the strengths of five Nordic universities to study the early histories of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. For their PhD they returned to History and Classics in the Interdepartmental Program in Ancient History at the University of Michigan. As a result, they bring an interdisciplinary perspective to both their research and their teaching.
Dr. Goggin teaches courses on Greek and Roman history and the history of Christianity.
