Davide Longo is a Ph.D. student in Modern European History. His research examines how individuals and societies experienced and remembered war. He is particularly interested in how mourning and commemoration shaped the lives of survivors and contributed to the formation of new social and political identities in the aftermath of the First World War. His current research explores the experiences of survivors of the First World War, with a focus on mothers, widows, and daughters of the fallen, and the ways in which practices of grief and mourning rituals circulated across national borders and became forms of public and political participation.

His first book, Dall’uomo al mito. Il generale Achille Papa tra Storia e memoria della Prima guerra mondiale, was published in Italy by Mimesis in March 2026. Based on his MA research, the book examines how the Fascist regime appropriated and mobilized the memory of Italian General Achille Papa after his death in the First World War to construct a narrative of national sacrifice. His article, “L’Italianità Contesa: Sovversivismo e identità nazionale nel movimento radicale italoamericano (1880–1940),” is forthcoming in Rivista di studi italiani in December 2026.
