2024-10-07 15:30:00 2024-10-07 17:15:00 International History Seminar: Recent works with Michael De Groot and The Bucharest Formula RegistrationEstablished at Comecon’s 9th meeting in June 1958, the Bucharest formula meant that the Comecon members would use a delayed average of world market prices as the basis for intra-bloc trade.  At this meeting of the International History Seminar, we will discuss Michael's upcoming article and how he uses the Bucharest formula as a lens to illuminate the link between international political economy and security behind the Iron Curtain as well as the complex relationship between global capitalism and socialism during the early Cold War.Speaker Michael De Groot is an assistant professor in the Department of International Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is broadly interested in the international, diplomatic, and economic history of the twentieth century. Current research focuses on economic statecraft and the link between political economy and security during the late Cold War. Before coming to IU, Michael held fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, and the University of Virginia.  He has a Ph.D. in History from the University of Virginia, 2018. Recent publications include Disruption: The Global Economic Shocks of the 1970s and the End of the Cold War (Cornell University Press, forthcoming March 2024).About the International History SeminarIf you are interested in attending this semester’s events and joining the International History Seminar, please send an email confirming your interest to the Hayes Chair Graduate Research Associate, Cam Givens, at hayeschairgra@osu.edu, and you will be included on the mailing list going forward. Michael De Groot

Michael De Groot is an assistant professor in the Department of International Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is broadly interested in the international, diplomatic, and economic history of the twentieth century. Current research focuses on economic statecraft and the link between political economy and security during the late Cold War. Before coming to IU, Michael held fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, and the University of Virginia.  He has a Ph.D. in History from the University of Virginia, 2018. 

Recent publications include Disruption: The Global Economic Shocks of the 1970s and the End of the Cold War (Cornell University Press, forthcoming March 2024).
