CEHV's COMPAS Program is proud to collaborate with Professor David Staley (History, OSU) on a colloquium about the topic, "What Universities Owe Democracy." This colloquium, part of CEHV's 2022-23 COMPAS Program on Education in our Democracy, will feature Ronald J. Daniels (President of Johns Hopkins University and author of What Universities Owe Democracy) and Michael Ignatieff (Former Rector and President of Central European University). It will be moderated by David J. Staley (History, OSU).
From What Universities Owe Democracy: Universities play an indispensable role within modern democracies. But this role is often overlooked or too narrowly conceived, even by universities themselves. In What Universities Owe Democracy, Ronald J. Daniels, the president of Johns Hopkins University, argues that―at a moment when liberal democracy is endangered and more countries are heading toward autocracy than at any time in generations―it is critical for today's colleges and universities to reestablish their place in democracy.
Professor Ignatieff led Central European University through its confrontation with the Hungarian government over the right of CEU to exist in Hungary, and in 2019 was awarded the Dan David Prize for his contribution to defending democracy.
