Neil Humphrey Research Profile

Neil Humphrey

Neil is a recent graduate and served as the administrative assistant for the Environmental History Initiative during the 2023/24 academic year.

I study the history of contemporary human-animal relations in Modern Britain and the Anglo-world. My dissertation, In a Dog's Age: Fabricating the Family Dog in Modern Britain, 1780-1920, examined how, why, and where the modern pet dog originated. The environmental history program at Ohio State allowed me to gain an advanced understanding of a complex field that examines many different nonhuman actors and offered me the guidance and mentorship to become a confident writer, public speaker, and teacher. Importantly, the faculty here allowed me to pursue my own research interests which provided me with both an intense professional and personal satisfaction. When I'm not writing about dogs, I enjoy hiking across the Midwest and Appalachia with my golden retriever, spending quality time at home with my cat, and cheering on the Columbus Crew.
