History Major Salma Albezreh Graduates from Ohio State as Stamps Eminence Scholar

Salma Albezreh
This past August, Salma Albezreh graduated from Ohio State as a Stamps Eminence Scholar with dual majors in History and Islamic Studies after successfully defending her honors thesis, “The Pathology of Philosophy or the Philosophy of Pathology?: A Conceptual-Historical Analysis of Mānikhūliyā in the Second Half of al-Balkhī’s Ninth-Century Treatise Maṣāliḥ al-abdān wa-l-anfus,” earning her honors research distinction in History.

Reflecting on her undergraduate experience, Salma shared:
“My journey with the formal study of History began my freshman year with Professor Staley's Polymath Circle, where he taught me the art of being ambitiously and thoughtfully curious about the past and what it could reveal about the human condition. You could say the rest was history! In the following years, the History Department nurtured that spirit of curiosity by empowering me to design my own interdisciplinary path. I built breadth by taking courses on a variety of fascinating histories, ranging from neuroscience and the Arabic language to U.S. foreign policy and ancient Near Eastern religion. Simultaneously, I had the opportunity to cultivate depth by working as a research and database intern, presenting at various national and international conferences, conducting epigraphical field surveys in the Middle East, and defending an undergraduate thesis in Islamic history.

At the heart of my undergraduate experience was the unwavering support and guidance of my professors who equipped me with the courage and tools to venture into unfamiliar intellectual territory, an adventure that never failed to yield transformative insights and discoveries. It is in their footsteps that I follow, and their grace that I hope to pay forward through my own career.”

Salma is continuing her studies this Fall with OSU's NESA department through an M.A. In Near Eastern Languages and Cultures.
